The Safari 4 Beta tab bar

Have you tried the Safari 4 Beta? Whaaa? Yes, the Safari 4 Beta tab bar has been relocated to the title bar. If you are uncomfortable with the new tab bar location – you can make the Safari 4 Beta revert to the old tab bar location. Here’s how.
The title bar is largely unused space – so it makes sense for Apple to move the Safari 4 tab bar to the top. Google Chrome uses the same tab location and we’ll all grow accustomed to the look. But if you simply must have the Safari tabs in the old location, here is a Terminal trick you may find useful.
Warning! Do not experiment with Terminal commands or instructions. If you don’t understand what a Terminal command does – then don’t use it. It is extremely easy to trash your system settings using Unix commands.

Close Safari and go to and open the application. Enter the command below into the Terminal window and press the Return key. Then close Terminal and restart Safari.
defaults write com.apple.Safari DebugSafari4TabBarIsOnTop -bool NO
Entering the same command but changing the “NO” to “YES” will restore the previous settings.

It took awhile – but I actually started to like the Tabs in the title bar in Safari 4 Beta. However, I would prefer the Tabs be a set size and not stretch over the available space. I didn’t like that part.
Naturally, as soon as I did prefer the new feature – it was doomed. Apple released the full version of Safari 4 and – yep – Tabs are back in the original location! Too bad Apple didn’t include a Tab location in preferences. Anyway, this is to let readers know that you can download the full version of Safari 4 now.
