Control Front Row with the keyboard

Front Row in Mac OS X LeopardFront Row is one of the free applications bundled in Mac OS X Leopard. If you upgraded an older Mac to Leopard and didn’t have an Apple Remote, and don’t wish to purchase an Apple Remote separately, you can still control Front Row using just your Mac keyboard. Here’s how.

Press Command+Escape to launch the Front Row application and use the Arrow Keys to navigate the Front Row menu. Press Return to select a menu item and press Escape to return to the previous menu.

If you’re on the top-level menu, pressing Escape will exit the Front Row application or you can quit the application at any time by pressing Command+Q.

So teach your old Macintosh a new trick. If you have Mac OS X Leopard installed, you’re just a few keystrokes away from enjoying movies, music, podcasts and DVDs with Apple’s Front Row software — even without an Apple Remote.

Here’s an update on a few more keyboard shortcuts for Front Row. Pressing Space will select, pause or play, depending on where you are in Front Row. If you’re navigating a menu, pressing Space will select the menu item. When media is playing, pressing Space will pause – and pressing again will restart. You can also use the Up/Down Arrows to adjust the volume when media is playing. And the quickest way to exit Front Row is to press Tab. Thanks.
