This handy core service includes numerous glyphs, dingbats, accented letters, mathematical symbols and much more. You probably have a handful of special characters that you use often. Would you like quick access to your favorite special characters? Here’s how.

Applications that are designed for Mac OS X will include access to the Character Palette under Edit → Special Characters but you may wish to enable the Input Menu among your menulets.

enable the input menu

To do this, go to Apple Menu → System Preferences → International and select the Input Menu tab. Make sure the checkbox next to Character Palette is checked. If the checkbox near the bottom, labeled Show input menu in menu bar, is not automatically checked, then check it, too.

You should now see the Input Menu menulet in the upper right on the menu bar – it looks like a little flag. Now click the flag and select Show Character Palette.
