Extra and accented letters on the iPhone keyboard

iPhone Accented LettersYou probably know that you can use a keyboard combination on your Mac to insert accented letters – such as È, É, Ê or Ë. But were you aware that the iPhone onscreen keyboard offers a quick way to input accented letters and alternate characters, too? Here’s how.

To insert an accented vowel on a Mac, press the Option key, along with `, E, I, or U, then release the keys and type a vowel. For example, press and release Option+U and then type an uppercase “E” to get Ë.

The iPhone virtual keyboard uses “press and hold” to reveal accented letters or alternate choices. Just hold down a vowel or the C, L, N or S letter for a moment to see an extended character set. Then simply slide your finger to choose.

The iPhone number keyboard also contains a few alternate characters. For additional currency choices, hold down the dollar sign to be offered ₩, ¥, £ and €. The question mark and exclamation mark offer their reversed versions and the double and single quotation marks reveal several alternative versions.
