17-inch Flat Panel | 1GHz
This 17-inch widescreen iteration reached the psychological 1GHz milestone for the iMac. Powered by the G4 1GHz processor with AltiVec “Velocity Engine,” it offered a number of improvements.
This model replaced the original 17-inch Flat Panel iMac introduced six months earlier.
In addition to the healthy 200MHz processor boost, this model cost $200 less than the first 17-inch model and included a SuperDrive. The frontside bus also rose from 100MHz to 133MHz.
The capacity of the hard drive remained at 80GB, but an increase from 5400 rpm to 7200 rpm provided a noticeable performance gain.
Unlike its less powerful 15-inch iMac sibling, which used the GeForce2, this model was the first to use the NVIDIA GeForce4 MX graphics processor with 64 MB of DDR SDRAM.
It came Airport Extreme ready with a build-to-order option for an internal Bluetooth module. There were two FireWire 400 ports, three USB ports (two more on the keyboard), a mini-VGA output port, built-in modem and Ethernet, headphone jack, Apple speaker minijack and audio line in jack.
The rear ports on this model were rearranged in a different order from previous iMacs.
The series came with the Apple Pro Keyboard, Apple Pro Mouse and Apple Pro Speakers.
