Show only the Active Window on Mac desktop

Mac OS X Leopard DockApple Macintosh users often run several applications simultaneously, resulting in numerous open windows. While clicking an application’s icon on the Dock will bring that application to the front – the Mac desktop will remain cluttered with the other open windows. If you enjoy a tidy workspace, have your Mac show only the active window instead. Here’s how.

To hide all the open windows of multiple Mac applications except for the application you wish to work in, simply hold down Command+Option when you click the application’s Dock icon. This works even when you have open panels, dialogs or Finder windows.

Whenever you wish to switch to another open application, just remember to hold down Command+Option each time you click an application’s icon on the Dock.

If you’re unsure of what applications you have open, Mac OS X Leopard provides a helpful visual cue. Just look for a little glowing blue sphere beneath the Dock icon. In Mac OS X Tiger, the open application indicator is a little black triangle instead of the blue sphere.
